Getting Started with IT for Online Students
Welcome to Rice University! The following information will introduce you to Rice IT resources.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) can set you up with the technology, accounts, and access necessary to study at the university. This document provides an overview of the basic services that are available to new online students. Please contact OIT if you have questions or need assistance.
Check out our advice to students on minimum computer requirements for coursework that includes links to vendor discounts and how to obtain free or discounted software. Learn more about phishing scams and campus digital security (viewing requires login with Rice NetID and password).
NetID and Student ID
- NetID is your unique login credential (username) for Rice resources, usually your initials followed by a number, such as abc123
- Rice Student ID is identified with "S" followed by 8 digits, such as S01234567

Using Duo (logging in with security)

Esther (student information system)

Install VPN Client Software (virtual private network for off-campus access, campus login required)
Rice's Acceptable Use Policy, Digital Copyright Compliance, and Computer Security
In order to use computers on the Rice network, you must:
- Adhere and comply with the Rice Appropriate Use of Information Technology Policy
- Adhere and comply with the Digital Copyright Compliance at Rice.
- Protect your computer, data, and university resources by following the digial security principles in the Security Awareness: Campus Guide (campus login required)
- Email at Rice - you will access your email via Gmail, part of the Google Workspace for Education suite.
