You can access emails from your Rice Gmail account through the Apple Mail application on your Mac computer.

Install Duo

Rice's two-factor authentication app, Duo Mobile, is required to access your Rice Gmail account on your Mac computer. Before continuing with the rest of the instructions, make sure that you have enrolled in Duo.

Install the Duo Mobile app from the iOS App Store

You can also access the Duo Mobile app through a secondary device (i.e., another phone or tablet) if you already have it installed elsewhere. Learn more about Duo enrollment.

Add the Rice Gmail Account to Apple Mail

1. Select the Apple Menu. Select System Settings...

2. Select Internet Accounts and choose Add Account...

3. Select Google for the account type.

4. Select Open Browser to begin the authentication process.

5. Enter your email address in the format of <YourNetID>@rice.edu and click 'Next'.

6. Enter your NetID credentials at the Rice single sign-on (SSO) prompt and click 'Login'.

7. Review the Duo Multi-Factor Authentication prompt.

8. Open the Duo Mobile app on your enrolled mobile device.

9. Select Approve to accept the login attempt. If Push notifications are enabled, you should see a banner appear on your mobile device asking you to verify your identity. Clicking the banner will automatically take you to the Duo app. Otherwise you may need to select Other options for additional verification methods.

A "Success" message should appear on your Mac computer.

You may be prompted 

10. Acknowledge the message requesting to allow macOS to access your Google Account.

Scroll to the bottom and select Allow.

11. Select Done. The new Gmail account will appear with Mail selected. Contacts, Calendars and Notes can also be selected, but are not required. Click 'Done'.

12. Review the System Settings. The System Settings > Internet Accounts > Google option will now show the newly added Gmail account. Select the red close button to exit.

13. Open Finder > Applications > Double-click the Mail application.

Messages from the newly added Gmail account should appear in Apple Mail.

Troubleshooting Duo

If Push notifications were not configured in Duo or a banner did not show up or only showed up momentarily, navigate back to the home screen and select the Duo Mobile app to finish the multi-factor authentication approval process for the sign in attempt (such as approving a Push notification or copying a passcode for the Passcode method).
