How to determine if your computer is encrypted with BitLocker (PC) or FileVault (Mac)

This document will illustrate how to determine if your PC or Mac computer is encrypted.

For Windows Users (BitLocker)

  1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Click the Start Menu icon, enter "BitLocker," and select "Manage BitLocker."
  3. If you see the word "On", then BitLocker is turned on for this computer and the drive is encrypted.
  4. If you have more than one Fixed data drive, be sure that BitLocker is turned on for every drive.

You can view the status of BitLocker under Operating system drive in the BitLocker Drive Encryption menu item.

For Mac Users (FileVault)

  1. Under the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of the screen, select "System Preferences".
  2. In the left pane of the System Preferences window, click on "Privacy & Security."
  3. If you see the word "On" next to FileVault, then FileVault is turned on and the disk is encrypted.
