Remote Desktop from Off Campus
How to remotely connect to your Rice computer from off campus.
1. Prerequisites
- For the machine that you will be connecting FROM:
- VPN must be installed on the machine that you are connecting from. See here for instructions on how to install and connect to VPN.
- For the machine that you will be connecting TO:
- You will need the full computer name for the computer that you will be connecting to. To locate the full computer name, you can do the following on that computer:
- Click Start, then type "About PC" then press Enter.
- In the box that comes up, your full computer name is referred to as "Full device name."
- The computer that you are connecting to must be powered on and connected to the network.

II. Open Remote Desktop Connection
The following steps should be performed from the computer you are connecting from:
- Connect to VPN.
- Click the Start button.
- In the search box, type Remote Desktop Connection.
- In the list of results, click Remote Desktop Connection.
- In the Computer box, type the full computer name of your office machine, then click Connect.
- Enter your NetID and password when prompted (your netid will need to be in the format of adrice\NetID). Click OK.
- If you are prompted with a dialog box that states "The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified. Do you want to connect anyway?" verify that the name of the computer you are connecting to matches in that box. Once you have verified that the computer name is correct, you can check the box labeled "Don't ask me again for connections to this computer" and then click the Yes button.
