Reporting Phishing/Spam Messages

This document explains how to report phishing/spam messages to the OIT Help Desk.
    

If you receive a phishing scam or suspicious email, please report it to the Information Security Office using the methods described below. To view some of the latest phishing campaigns at Rice, check out the Information Security Office's page on Phishing

If OIT is going to intercept this scam and capture the data, the original e-mail will be needed. Choose the appropriate mail service or mail application from the links below and follow the steps to send the appropriate original mail message as an attachment from the mail service or mail application. You can forward the email to phishing@rice.edu.


Outlook 2016 / Outlook 2013 

1. Create new message
2. Drag the message you want to forward from the message list and drag/drop it in the body of the message
3. Fill in the "To" field and click "Send"
Outlook 2016 for macOS
1. In the messages list, right click the message you want to forward
2. Click "Forward as Attachment"
3. Fill in the "To" field and click "Send"
Apple Mail
1. Right click on the message in the list of messages
2. Click "Forward as Attachment"
3. Fill in the "To" field and click "Send"

Thunderbird
1. Right click on the message in the list of messages
2. Select "Forward As", then click "Attachment"
3. Fill in the "To" field and click "Send"
Google Mail
1. Open the message
2. Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right of the message
3. Click "Show Original"
4. Click "Download Original", save it, and send it as an attachment in a new message
Outlook.com/Office 365 Online
1. Open the webmail in two browser windows
2. Create a new email in one browser window
3. In the other browser window, drag the email you want to attach from your email list and drop it in the blank email
4. Fill in the "To" field and click "Send"
Rice Webmail 
1. Log into webmail.rice.edu
2. Right click the message you want to forward from the message list
3. Select "Forward", then click "As Attachment"
4. Fill in the "To" field and click "Send"
