How to add an OIT printer to Ubuntu
Your computer must be connected to the Rice Owls Wireless or Wired Networks. If you are off-campus, start by logging in to VPN.
1. Select your Printer Managment Utility.
2. Next you will need to add the printer to your machine.
3. You will then need to select a Windows print server using smb protocol.
The print server you will go through is owlprinting.ad.rice.edu
- Make sure to type owlprinting.ad.rice.edu/"queue name" (without the quotes).
- When prompted for your Username and Password be sure to include ADRICE\ before your NetID as this ensures that the correct domain is checked for authentication.

4. Next you will need to install the print driver which again can be found at the Printers and Plotters locations & rates page or as in Ubuntu you may be able to find the driver pre-installed with your Linux distribution.
5. If given the option to install optional components consult the Printer and Plotter Locations & Rates page to see if the printer you are trying to install has duplex printing or other options available.
6. Your new printer should now be setup. Simply apply any naming schemes you would like and print.
