Mail headers - view and/or send the source of an email message

This document explains how to obtain and send the source of an email message (also referred to as: mail headers).

  •  Rice Webmail 
    • To view the headers

      1. Log into Rice Mail 
      2. Select the message you want to view the headers of.
      3. Open the message, 
      4. At the top right, select View Source

      To send the header information

      1. Select and copy all the text from within the 'Message details' window. Then close the window and paste this information into a email message.

  •  Outlook 2016 / Outlook 2013 
    • To view the headers

      1. Launch Outlook 2016 or Outlook 2013.
      2. Go to Inbox.
      3. Select and double-click to open message you want to view the headers of.
      4. Go to File, select Properties (to the right) from the bottom of the list, the Internet headers will be listed at the bottom. 

      To send the header information

      1. Select the text in the Internet headers window, copy all the text from within the 'Internet headers' window. Then Close the window and paste this information into an email message.

  •  Outlook 2016 for Mac 
    • To view the headers

      1. Launch Outlook 2016 on the Mac
      2. Right click the message within your folder listing.
      3. Select "View Source" from the drop-down menu. A window will open showing the header information of the selected message.

      To send the header information

      1. Select and copy all the text from within the 'Message details' window. Then close the window and paste this information into a email message.

  •  Gmail 
    • To view the headers

      1. Log in to Gmail
      2. Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
      3. Click on the down arrow next to Reply, at the top of the message pane.
      4. Select Show Original.

      To send the header information

      1. Select and copy all the text from within the 'Message details' window. Then close the window and paste this information into a email message.

  •  Apple Mail 
    • To view the headers

      1. Launch Apple Mail
      2. Click the message you'd like to view headers for.
      3. Go to the View menu.
      4. Select Message, then Long Headers.

      The full headers will appear in the window below your inbox.

        To send the header information

        1. Select and copy all the text from within the 'Message details' window. Then close the window and paste this information into a email message.

    If you are having issues with your email, it is recommended that you include a copy of the mail header into a Help Desk ticket.
    •  Thunderbird
      • To view the headers

        1. Launch Thunderbird
        2. Click the message you'd like to view headers to select it.
        3. Hold the control key and U (CTRL-U).
        4. A new window will appear with the full text of the message including headers

        To send the header information

        1. Select (CTRL-A) and copy (CTRL-C) all the text from within the 'Message details' window. Then close the window and paste (CTRL-V) this information into a email message.
    If you are having issues with your email, it is recommended that you include a copy of the mail header into a Help Desk ticket.
