This document explains how to access secure university resources from off campus.
Connect to Rice Resources
  • Use a virtual private network (VPN) to access secure university resources. 
  • Use remote desktop connection, which allows your remote computer to function just as if it were your desktop computer. (Note: Remote Desktop needs to be set up on your work desktop while still on campus.)

Resource Description
Duo Authentication Duo is a authentication tool that adds extra protection when logging on accounts. Required for VPN, Esther, Banner, and changing NetID or Google passwords.
Email | Webmail
Access Rice Mail or Cyrus mail via the Webmail interface (primarily faculty and staff use Rice Mail)

Email | Rice Google
Access your Rice Google Mail (for individuals using Rice Google Mail)

Email | Exchange 
Access email via the Outlook Web app | Jones Graduate Business School and some departments.

Canvas
Canvas is Rice's Learning Management System for all course-related curriculum needs.
Go to the Canvas Status page to find daily incident reports on Canvas.

Box at Rice University
Enterprise cloud-based storage and collaboration service.


Zoom Video Communication    

Zoom is a video and web conferencing tool that unifies cloud video conferencing, simple online meetings, and group messaging into one easy-to-use platform.



Cisco VoIP 
Cisco VoIP Portal - Cisco Unified Communications Self Care Portal - set up your voicemail PIN and if your phone is set up for single number reach.

Library Journals                         
When accessing Fondren Library electronic resources while off-campus, you will be required to verify your Rice affiliation with the Rice EZproxy system.  

VPN 
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network because it makes your computer appear as if it was connected to Rice's network.

VPN allows you to connect to the Rice network and access these restricted resources such as: Banner, Edgar, Hyperion, Rice Marketplace.

Remote Desktop Connection   
A Remote desktop connection allows you to connect to another computer. Remote desktop connection should be setup prior to working remotely or travel.

Eduroam
Eduroam is a worldwide access service that allows individuals from member institutions to connect to wireless networks at other member institutions. Before traveling, setup Eduroam using the campus Eduroam network.
