CRC Data Management Policy
Data Transfer Node
We provide access to high speed data transfer services between institutions on the internet by managing a data transfer node (DTN) that has access to our GPFS parallel file systems as well as high-speed (10-Gigabit Ethernet) access to the Rice campus network and high-speed national networks such as LEARN and Internet2. The DTN serves as a Globus Online endpoint with designation rice#dtn . This enables Globus Online users (free signup) to graphically schedule large data transfers between endpoints through their website, or a secure shell interface without having to deal with the overhead of Globus certificates and authentication mechanisms. For more information, please see our documentation.
$WORK Shared File System
$WORK is a 214TB GPFS parallel file system shared among multiple clusters. It is similar to each individual cluster’s $PROJECTS file systems, except that the default quota is 2TB instead of 50GB and it is shared across multiple clusters, so binary compatibility issues are possible.
Research Data Compliance
Due to recent changes in NSF, NIH, DOD, and other government granting agencies, Research Data Management has become an important area of growth for Rice and is a critical factor in both conducting and funding research. The onus of maintaining and preserving research data generated by funded research is placed squarely upon the research faculty, post docs, and graduate students conducting the research. It is imperative that you are aware of your compliance responsibilities so as not to jeopardize the ability of Rice University to receive federal funding. We will help in any way possible to provide you the information and assistance you need, but the best place to start is the campus research data management website.
