Updating a Password on Apple Mail
This information is for Apple Mail users who want to update their changed email password through the Apple Mail application.
Note: These instructions are for updating a password that has already been changed. In other words, it is to update a password already stored on Apple Mail. You have to go to the email provider (i.e. Gmail, Yahoo, etc...) in order to actually change the email password.
For MacOS 10.12 (Sierra) or newer:
Step 1: Launch Apple Mail.
Step 2: At the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Mail > Preferences.
Step 3: Under Accounts, select the Server Settings tab.
Step 4: Enter your password in the Password field of the Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) section as well as the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) section.
For OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or older:
Step 1: Launch Apple Mail.
Step 2: At the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Mail > Preferences.
Step 3: Under Accounts, select your email account from the left-hand side of the window. Make sure the Account Information tab is selected.
Step 4: In the Password field, erase the current entry and type in your new password.
Step 5: Select Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) > Edit SMTP Server List.
Step 6: Choose the server account used by your email account and then select the Advanced tab.
Step 7: In the Password field, erase the current entry and type in your new password.
Step 8: If Apple Mail asks you to confirm these changes, be sure to do so.
