Kaltura: My Media and Media Gallery in Canvas

This article will demonstrate the differences between my media and media gallery in canvas. Each of these tools will be explained here.

My Media VS Media Gallery

My Media:

is a repository for your own media. Only you can see the media there and it carries across courses. Users first upload audio and video directly to My Media, a personal cloud based storage area in Canvas. In the My Media library, users can choose to manage their media across all their courses. Kaltura also provides links and embed codes that you can use to share your media with others.

Media Gallery:

is a common space for videos within a course. Anyone enrolled in the course can see videos in Media Gallery. This tool can be moderated by the instructor in a variety of ways. Once media is published to the Media Gallery students can view videos, add comments if allowed by the instructor, and create videos to submit in response to an assignment or in a discussion. PLEASE NOTE: New media is PUBLISHED in the course by default. If you want the video to be Private just to you, you must go to Actions, Publish, and set the media to private.

Both of these tools can be found in the course navigation bar on the left hand side of each course (#1). The instructor can remove these tools from the navigation bar in their course by first clicking "Settings" (#2) in the course navigation bar and then, on the settings navigation bar clicking "Navigation" (#3). You can then drag and drop My Media or Media Gallery down under the "Drag items here to hide them from students" label (#4). This will hide the tools from students in that course.
