On April 16, 2019, Oracle changed the license terms for Java 8. Updates to Oracle Java 8 released after this date require the purchase of a commercial license.

To ensure Rice-owned computers are in compliance with Oracle software license requirements, OIT is taking action to remove Oracle Java JDK 8u211 or later. For OIT managed systems that require Java, OpenJDK is a potential replacement that is available either from the Software Center, or directly from https://openjdk.org/.

Individuals who have already purchased a commercial Oracle Java 8 license or who would like to purchase the commercial license, please contact the OIT Help Desk at 713-348-HELP or helpdesk@rice.edu to request an exemption from Oracle Java 8 removal.

Please note that the first version released under Oracle's commercial license terms was Oracle Java JDK 8u211. Exceptions for personal and development use are extremely limited. OIT has confirmed that university-owned or grant-owned equipment do not fall under Oracle’s definition of “personal use”. Oracle also does not include a free or reduced cost license for any educational or research activities.
