SECURITY: Endpoint (PC and Mac) Automated Security Patching Started (note: includes computer reboot)

Posted: 10:04:43, Sunday, Nov 7, 2021   Expiration: 10:04:43, Sunday, May 1, 2022

Beginning in December 2021, OIT initiated a monthly maintenance schedule for managed Windows and Apple MacOS systems in order to automatically apply security patches to managed devices. This is in response to increasing malicious activities and system vulnerabilities that impact the technology infrastructure at Rice.

To manage these risks, this monthly computer update schedule was implemented for all productivity computers as well as teaching and computer labs. These updates are available for self-selected installation and can be deferred for up to 16 days, before they are automatically applied with a system restart. For more details on the installation process or to request exclusion from automatic installation and restart, please see the following KB article:

NOTICE:  If you have research or laboratory computers (PC or Mac) whose uninterrupted uptime is considered an essential function or have technical limitations or incompatibilities, please contact the OIT Helpdesk to a request for an exclusion from automatic security patching with restart for those specific devices.
