Email Scam | “I’m aware that is your password”

Some of our users have been receiving email messages with the stated salutation in their email. This is a new twist of previously reported email scams that have been reported.
The message purports to have been sent from a hacker who’s compromised your computer and used your webcam to record a video of you while you were watching porn. The missive threatens to release the video to all your contacts unless you pay a Bitcoin ransom. The new twist? The email now references a real password previously tied to the recipient’s email address.
NetID passwords provide access to multiple services. If your NetID password and/or personal email password is an old password, we recommend that you change your passwords. If some of these passwords are associated with actual websites and/or other services, you should change your password.
1- Use long and strong passwords
2- Get a password manager to ensure each account has a unique password
3- Turn on two-factor authentication for your important accounts
