First Time Configuration for Apple Mail

Rice University's central e-mail system provides e-mail services on the web or through your favorite e-mail software. This document describes how to set up Apple Mail to access your Rice e-mail. To use it, you will need:

  • A Rice e-mail account on our central e-mail system.
  • A Mac computer with MacOS.
  • A working internet connection (Rice office or any other standard internet connection).

First-time setup

1. Open Apple Mail. The Apple Mail icon should be in the Dock, or you can find it on the hard disk in the Applications folder.

2. A window will popup with several options for email clients. Choose the "Add Other Mail Account" setting and click "Continue".

3. After a moment, Apple Mail will give you another window asking for more information.

  • Name: Your Full Name
  • Email Address: Your Rice e-mail address (NetID@rice.edu)
  • Password: Your NetID password

Click "Sign In"

4. Apple Mail will then ask you to enter more information to manually configure your account.

  • Email Address: Your Rice email address (NetID@rice.edu)
  • User Name: Your NetID
  • Password: Your NetID password
  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Incoming Mail Server: imap.mail.rice.edu
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mail.rice.edu

Click "Sign In"

5. Apple Mail will then prompt you to click "Done".

You should now be able to send/receive emails from Apple Mail. However, if something is not working, you will need to review your settings by following the steps below.

Apple Mail settings confirmation:

1. To check the IMAP account setup, click on "Mail" and then "Preferences". You will then click the "Accounts" tab and then "Server Settings" tab. Make sure to uncheck the "Automatically manage connection settings" check box to see more options as shown below.  Also, make sure to change the Port to "993".

2. In the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" section make sure to uncheck the "Automatically manage connection settings" check box to see more options as shown below. Make sure to change the port to "465".

3. Once you modify these settings, click "Save".
