Add the Rice Gmail Account to Apple Mail
You can access emails from your Rice Gmail account through Apple Mail. Apple Mail is the native email application available on Apple devices.
Install Duo
Rice's two-factor authentication app, Duo Mobile, is required to access your Rice Gmail account on your iPhone or iPad. Before continuing with the rest of the instructions, make sure that you have enrolled in Duo.
Install the Duo Mobile app from the iOS App Store
You can also access the Duo Mobile app through a secondary device (i.e., another phone or tablet) if you already have it installed elsewhere. Learn more about Duo enrollment
Add the Rice Gmail Account to Apple Mail
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Select Mail.
3. Select Add Account...
4. Select Google for the account type.
5. Enter your email address in the format of <YourNetID>@rice.edu. For example: johndoe@rice.edu.
6. Enter your NetID credentials at the Rice SSO prompt.
7. Follow the directions in the Duo app to complete the two-factor authentication process. If Push notifications are enabled, you should see a banner appear on your device asking you to verify your identity. Clicking the banner will automatically take you to the Duo app. Otherwise you may need to select Other options for additional verification methods.
Select Approve in the Duo app to accept the login attempt.
8. Return to the home screen of your device. Re-open the Settings app. A "Success" message should appear.
9. Review the new message requesting to allow iOS to access your Google account. Scroll to the bottom of the message and select Allow.
10. Select Save. The new Gmail account will appear with the Mail toggle highlighted. Contacts, Calendars, and Notes may also be selected, but are not required.
11. Review the Accounts section in Apple mail to confirm the connection was successful. The Settings > Mail > Accounts section will now show all available accounts, including your newly added Gmail account.
12. Return to the home screen of your device. Select the Mail icon. Your Gmail messages should appear in your inbox.
If Push notifications were not configured in Duo or a banner did not show up or only showed up momentarily, navigate back to the home screen and select the Duo Mobile app to finish the multi-factor authentication approval process for the sign in attempt (such as approving a Push notification or copying a passcode for the Passcode method).
After completing this step, return to the Home Screen and return to the Settings app to complete the process.
