Tableau Desktop and Prep Builder Install Instructions

  1. Obtain a Tableau license key. If you don't already have a Tableau license, request a quote by creating an RT Ticket (helpdesk@rice.edu) to Central Procurement. If you are unsure or already have a Tableau license key assigned to you and are having issues retrieving it, please create a ticket to Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence (EDBI) Team for assistance.

  2. Download Tableau. Click on the link below for which product you are downloading:

    1. Download Tableau Desktop - OIT suggests using Tableau Desktop 2021.3.7.

    2. Download Tableau Prep Builder - OIT suggests using Tableau Prep Builder 2021.3.3.

  3. Once the file above has finished downloading:

    1. Follow these instructions to install Tableau Desktop and Prep.

    2. Follow these instructions to activate Tableau Desktop and Prep with a product key.
  4. If you encounter any issues installing, please contact the EDBI Team by filling out this form.

Tableau User Group (TUG) information

Join Tableau User Group meetings to stay up-to-date with Tableau updates on campus, learn tips and tricks, and see other members of the Rice community present their innovative dashboards! Keep a lookout for emails from tableau-users@mailman.rice.edu for upcoming meetings and information. All Tableau desktop license holders are automatically added to the Tableau User Group. Tableau Server

Tableau server is a platform that allows you to share your reports to others across campus. Tableau server can be accessed via dataviz.rice.edu on the Rice university network or VPN.

Request access by creating a ticket in the OIT Enterprise Data and BI Queue or visit data.rice.edu/contactus.

For instructions on publishing objects to Tableau server, visit https://www.tableau.com/learn/starter-kits/publish/server. Publishing content on Tableau server requires a Tableau license.
