Dispose of Computing Resources

All Rice purchased devices (computers, hard drives, flash drives, printers, etc) capable of storing information must be purged of all information (user data, software licensed to the university, etc) before the transfer of ownership. This includes devices both being transferred from one department to another and those leaving the campus through the Rice Classifieds or recycling.

Rice University uses several procedures to clean information from the computer's hard drive.

To have a Rice-owned computer cleaned of information:
  • Open an OIT ticket to contact your Divisional Support Representative for assistance.
  • The Mudd Operations Center located Mudd 109 will take other Rice-owned data-capable pieces of hardware (such as backup tapes) and help make arrangements to properly destroy them.
For devices valued over $5,000.00, follow University Policy 809-03, Property Control, Responsibility and Procedures.

Please contact the IT Security Office if you have a personal device that needs to be cleaned.
