Accessing a Rice VDI

How to access a VDI on a RICE computer where the client is already installed

On a Rice PC:

VMWare Horizon Client is installed on all Podium and Teaching Lab PCs.

Access it from the Start Menu from “All Programs” or by searching for it.

Log in with your NetID user name and password. (If you are not affiliated with Rice and have been granted a guest user name and password, please enter this info here.)

Login credentials requested here

Double-click on the VDI.

The VDIs which you have access to will be shown.

Select whether you want to allow or deny access to your local files.

A selection can be made by clicking on the allow or deny button shown here.

If you need to access files from a USB drive, click “Connect USB Device” and select your USB device.

Select the USB drive you want to connect, if applicable

After your session, be sure to LOG OFF. Go to the Start Menu and click “Log off”.

Go to Start then Log OFF to log off of the VDI

If you just click on the “X” to close the VDI, you will still be logged in.

From a Mac:

From the Launcher, select the VMWare Horizon client

Select the VDI you would like to access.

  • DO NOT save files to the VDI desktop; they might not be there the next time you log in. Instead, save files to a USB drive or a network location (eg, your U Drive).
  • Be sure to LOG OFF. If you just click on the “X” to close the VDI, you will still be logged in.
  • If you are accessing the VDI from an off-campus location, you need to connect to the Rice network with VPN.
