VPN for Mac: Snow Leopard (10.6) through Sierra (10.12)

VPN Agreement / Installation and configuration using Snow Leopard's built-in VPN client to connect to Rice Cisco VPN server

NOTE: If the user needs VPN to connect to Banner, you will need to download the Cisco VPN client from and manually import the .pcf file they were provided with. In addition, they will need to login using a plus after their netid: for example 'jra6+' instead of 'jra6'. For help with the manual download of the Cisco VPN client, follow instructions similar to those for OSX 10.2-10.5, but download the correct client from the page.

To use a VPN at Rice:  

Step 1: Log in:  Rice University Online Account Management System: 
Step 2: You must accept the terms and conditions, select "Accept".

Before you install the VPN software: 
Download the RiceNet.pcf file.
[Right click to "download" to your computer.]


After you have Downloaded  the appropriate client for your operating system.

Step 3:  Double-click to expand Zip file.

Step 4:  Double-click the file name: RiceVPN networkConnect (You may need to authenticate using your local administrative credentials)

Step 5:  The System Preferences utility should open to Network Settings with the newly added "VPN (IPSec) interface added.


Step 6: . Enter your NetID in the space labelled Account Name.


Step 7: Click Apply and the click Connect.

Step 8:  You will be prompted to enter your Password (there is no option to save the password).


8. VPN Connection is successful; select OK.


Step 10:  The VPN connection menu is activated.  You can use this to quickly Connect or Disconnect to the Rice VPN server.
