Working remotely: restarting your Windows computer

This article will demonstrate how Rice faculty, staff, and graduate students who are using VPN and Remote Desktop to login to a campus computer can restart that computer remotely. Normally, restarting a Windows computer on campus requires someone to physically be at the computer to enter the Bitlocker PIN. However with this process you can enter it remotely as long as you have administrative rights on the machine.

Before proceeding: You must have administrative rights on the campus computer that you are remotely connected to; otherwise, you will not be able to suspend Bitlocker encryption and restart.

Step 1: Select Start (Windows logo button) on your Windows machine and then begin typing Bitlocker. Once you see Manage Bitlocker as a Control Panel result, select it.

Step 2: In the BitLocker Drive Encryption window, select Suspend protection and then select Yes to the confirmation dialogue box that pops up.

Step 3: Your computer will now be ready to restart once without needing the BitLocker PIN to be entered. If you need to restart your computer more than once, you will need to perform this before every restart.
For any additional assistance, including getting administrative access to your on-campus computer, contact the OIT Help Desk.
