ARCHIVE - Accessing Files From Your Home Drive (U Drive) from a Podium (Classroom) or Lab Computer
This document details instructions for accessing files from your home drive on a classroom or lab PC or Mac.
- Log on to the PC or Mac with your Rice NetID username and password.
- Your home drive (also known as your U Drive) is automatically mounted on podium and lab PCs and Macs.
- Navigate to your home drive.
- On a PC, open File Explorer. You can do this by double-clicking on the This PC icon on the desktop, or clicking on the small yellow File Explorer icon in the taskbar. Click on This PC, and you will see your home drive under Network locations.
- On a Mac, your home drive will mount automatically, and it will appear on the desktop.
- For best performance, COPY (don't move) your file from your home drive to the computer itself. The easiest way to do this is by dragging and dropping the file onto the desktop. Make sure the original file remains on your home drive. Then, open the file from the desktop.
- Since you are using a publicly accessible computer, be sure to delete your file(s) from the computer and empty the trash can or recycle bin before you log off the computer.
NOTE: If you are not using a podium or lab computer, you can still manually mount your home drive by following the instructions from one of the operating system-specific KB articles on mounting the storage drive.
