Applying for allocations on RANGE
To use the RANGE cluster, Rice research faculty must apply for an allocation of compute cycles. Applications will be reviewed to ensure that the computational workflows are making efficient use of the advanced GPU capabilities in RANGE. The CRC strongly recommends that RANGE applicants make use of the GPUs on the NOTS cluster to debug and refine their workflows prior to applying for an allocation.
The CRC is extending and expanding the Early Adopter program for RANGE for the period of December 1, 2025 through February 16, 2026. Participants in the Early Adopter program will be granted exploratory allocations to profile their code and workflows on RANGE. We will begin accepting applications for this second phase on November 12, 2025. To apply for the Early Adopter program, please complete the following:
-
All users of RANGE must also have active NOTS accounts. Please ensure that you have an active faculty sponsor account and approve NOTS accounts for any members of your lab who need access to run jobs on RANGE. CRC sponsor and user accounts can be applied for at this link: CRC Apply for Account

The CRC will review applications and successful applicants will gain access to RANGE beginning Dec. 1, 2025. In addition to the service units (SUs) provided as part of a RANGE allocation, successful applicants will also receive a 10TB subsidized data storage allocation on our Research High-Capacity Facility (RHF), which is persistent network storage directly attached to the RANGE and NOTS clusters and can be used to stage data in and out of the $SCRATCH filesystem.
The CRC will begin charging fees for using RANGE beginning February 16, 2026. Current fees are posted on our CRC Fees page.
