User Accounts
Activation and termination of user accounts on the Shared Research Computing Resources is at the discretion of the user’s sponsor and/or the Center for Research Computing in accordance with Rice security policies and the policies of the Shared Computing Service Center.
Data
We will attempt to retain home directory data (i.e., will not intentionally erase data) for all user accounts in their respective home directories for a period of one year after the account is either closed or pending sponsorship. It is important to note that retention is NOT equal to backup, recovery and/or archiving. We do not guarantee the safety of your data; only to do our best to provide a stable environment for it and minimize loss.
Backup, Recovery, and Archiving
Backup and archival of data remains the sole responsibility of the end user. At this point in time our shared computing enterprise does not offer these services in any automated way. We strongly encourage all users to take full advantage of Central IT’s storage services, departmental servers, individual group resources, and/or cloud to prevent accidental loss or deletion of critical data. Please feel free to contact us for advice on best practices in data management. We welcome any suggestions for offering a higher level of data security as we move forward with shared computing at Rice.
