View and/or Send Headers of an Email

This document explains how to obtain and send the source of an email message (also referred to as: mail headers). Email headers are usually used to see information such as who has sent and received a message, where the message has passed through a server, and what kind of errors may have prevented the email from reaching its intended destination. OIT will ask for email headers if someone reports a suspicious message, for example, a phishing or spam email message. This will enable OIT to block this type of message from going through our mail servers.

If you are having issues with your email or suspect a phishing/spam email, it is recommended that you include a copy of the mail header into a Help Desk ticket.
