This document provides instructions on how to install the VMWare Horizon Client to users who have access to a VDI.
To access a VDI on a non-Rice computer, you must download and install the VMware Horizon Client.
Inside a web browser, connect to https://it-vconnect.rice.edu. If you are not connected to the Rice network, (eg, if you are off campus or if you are using "Rice Visitor" wireless) you will have to use VPN.
Click on the "Install VMware Horizon Client" on the left:
It will take you to the VMware site to download the client for your operating system. The rest of these instructions are for Windows, but Mac instructions are similar.
Find your operating system, and then click on “Go to downloads” next to it:
If asked what to do with the file, select "Save file."
Then double-click on the file.
You will be asked if you want to allow the app to make changes to your computer. Select "Yes."
A license agreement will appear. Select "Agree & Install."
You will need to restart the computer to complete the installation.
After you reboot the computer, you will see the VMware Horizon Client icon on your desktop. If not, try going to your start menu and searching for "VMware."
Double-click the VMWare Horizon client to launch it.
Click on "Add Server."
Enter the name of the connection server, it-vconnect.rice.edu, and then click "Connect."
Enter your NetID and password.
Launch the VDI by double-clicking it, or you can right-click and select "Launch":
Select whether you want to allow or deny access to your local files.
If you need to access files from a USB drive, click "Connect USB Device," and select your USB device.
After your session, be sure to LOG OFF. Go to the start menu and click "Log off." If you just click the X to close the VDI, you will still be logged in.
