Using Shrewsoft for VPN on Windows 8 and Windows 10

The Rice Cisco VPN client does not support Windows 8 or 10. This document is a guide to Install and configure the Shrewsoft alternative VPN client.

 IMPORTANT: 
  • To use VPN at Rice University, you must agree to the terms and conditions found at::  https://mynetid.rice.edu/oams/app/
  • Download the RiceNet.pcf file to your computer for use to complete your VPN setup.

VPN Connectivity is not inconsistent for Windows 8 and Windows 10 using the current Cisco VPN client located under the VPN agreement under the mynetid.rice.edu portal. Some of our clients have been successful with the free Shrew Soft VPN Client.  This is an installation guide for Shrewsoft, which works sometimes with Windows 8 and Windows 10. To install it go to this Download Link. Click the link pictured below after scrolling down to the "Downloads" section.

 Step 1. Click on the "Installer" link under Downloads to download the Shrew Soft Client.

Step 2. Double click the installer to start the installation of the Shrew Soft Client, Click Next.

Step 3. Choose the Standard Edition, and click Next.

Step 5.  Wait for the installer to finish installing.

Step 6. Locate and open the Shrew Soft Client, now called VPN Access Manager.window.  Go to File, click on import.

 Step 7Navigate to the RiceNet.pcf file you downloaded, select Open

Step 8. The Rice VPN Connection should be displayed below

Step 9. Double click on the RiceNet.pcf  icon will bring you to the login screen for the VPN connection. Log in with your NetID and password.

Step 10.  You should now see the confirmation that you have been connected to the Rice VPN network.

Note: In order to test the VPN on campus, connect to Rice Visitor wireless and then launch the VPN Client. It will not work if you are already on Rice Owls wireless network or connected to the wired network.
